ENTREPRENEURSHIP
MANUAL

This manual was developed for a seminar series we did on Entrepreneurship. It includes a discussion of the kind of business to start, types of business organization and all the usual material on finances, marketing, etc.

There is also a section on the "inner game" of business, which focuses on helping you be mentally prepared for the curves business (and life) throw at you. This is heavily based on neurolinguistic programming (NLP), for which there are other resources on the internet. If you like what you see in the manual, do a search on "neurolinguistic programming" or "nlp" on your favorite search engine.

We will be updating this manual shortly, and will include a chapter on computers and the internet. Check back with us regularly to download the latest version.

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS

Financial Analysis is the art of understanding what your organization's financial statements are telling you. This set of notes covers the basics of ratio analysis, including ratios which provide you information on profitability, stability, liquidity, efficiency and growth.

Beyond simply telling you how to calculate these ratios, this set of notes also makes a beginning at showing you how to interpret them as they relate to your business.

Your financial records are the most important information source you have about the health of your business - shouldn't you make the most of them?

STRATEGIC PLANNING

"If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." Or so says the old saying. Strategic planning is all about finding out where your business is going, and determining the best road to get you there. In addition, a strategic plan forms the basis of all your operational plans, from the annual business plan down to the nitty-gritty details of your next marketing campaign.

This is a set of notes from a course we developed on strategic planning. The notes are in point form, and will serve as a starting point for you on your planning process. What we strove for in these notes was to stimulate questions in your mind, to provide direction for your planning process.

Bank of Nova Scotia Business Plan

ScotiaBank has upgraded their business planning package. If you downloaded the earlier version, you should return to their site (link below) and get this new version. It has been greatly improved!

The Bank of Nova Scotia has developed and distributes a great business planning package. This is excellent free software takes a question and answer approach to the process, and guides you through a complete business plan. It even includes spreadsheets. When you have completed it, you can import the files into your word processor and spreadsheet program for fine-tuning.

If you are at all interested in getting a business plan together, this is the best package we have found to do it. And, for those of you not from the Great White North, it is not especially biased towards Canada, so you can use it internationally.

Click here to download the software. This page also features a discussion of the planning process and its benefits. The program requires at least Windows 98 or higher and Microsoft Word 98 or higher to run.
